There are many Tibetan refugee settlements west of Mysore, India. Scattered
over low, rolling hills patterned with green cornfields, the
settlements are officially off limits to foreign tourists without the
necessary permit, however, we stopped in, and had no problems. The
Tibetans are extremely friendly, and very hospitable. Bylakuppe is one
of the main settlements, and is the site of the monastic university,
Sera Gompa.
This is their Mission Statement:
May I at all times, both now, and forever be, a guide for those who
have lost their way. A bridge for those with rivers to cross. A lamp
for those in need of light. A protector for those without protection.
A ship for those with oceans to cross. A sanctuary for those in
danger. A place of refuge for those in need of shelter. And a servant
to all those in need.
