Helping the Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

A chance to be of service:

It seems such a short time ago that I was sitting in America feeling shocked and horrified as I watched the Tsunami disaster in S.E. Asia, an area I spend months each year. Now I am in Indonesia watching another horrific tragedy in my own country.

Obviously the survivors of this disaster need many things. In the short term their needs are basic. Items like food, water, clothing, and shelter are the most needed, and appreciated. Then there are those intangibles like a smile, an arm around the shoulder, or simply someone to listen.

There is always something one can do. And as always, a disaster seems to unite us as we turn outward, and for a short time are reminded of just how insignificant most of our worries are. And how fragile life really is.

There are many organizations that are set up to deal with this situations. Below are just a few should you wish to explore this further.

Updated/Expanded list of where to send donations & seek assistance:

-- CNN.com has been posting the names of those who wish to let loved ones know they are all right after the storm. If you were in Katrina’s path and want to post your name here, please send an e-mail to the Hurricane Victims Desk: hurricanevictims@cnn.com

For each person you are reporting for the list, CNN asks that you include first and last name, age, hometown, state and a brief message. You may also include a phone number or e-mail address where those on the list may be reached. The list will be updated regularly.
