Yoga Bound Travel Adventures:

Bangkok to India

After 6 weeks in India, we left Delhi, at midnight, November 1st, headed back to Bangkok. This trip we have climbed mountains in the northern region where the distant views of the Himalayas were just spectacular. We visited the majestic Taj Mahal. We spent 3 days on a camel safari in the desert around Jaisalmer, sleeping under the vast sky, with the stars  twinkling above, feeling at once so small, and insignificant, and yet so at one with the Universe. It's been a blast, but now it's time to move on.

This was our second trip to India. Our first trip was in 2001, where we stayed in the south, in Mysore, which is in the state of Karnataka. This year we arrived in India on September 15th, from Bali, Indonesia, via Bangkok. No two experiences could be more extreme.  India is not an easy place to travel. And most of the travelers I talk to agree that you need a holiday after visiting. India is crowded, congested, noisy, and dirty. You are constantly being hounded by touts, and in many places, beggars. You begin to feel like nothing more than a dollar bill that everyone wants a piece of.

The bureaucracy turns a simple task like booking a ticket into a half day's work. There are few creature comforts, even when you travel first class.  The poverty can get you down. As can the lack of food choices outside the major cities. Which can make you feel weak, and listless. No one seems to mean what they say, or  say what they mean. Bait, and switch schemes run rampant. It is a wearying experience. So what's the appeal?

As a country, or as some refer to it, a Continent, India has a vast, and varied landscape. There is featureless flat plains, deserts, the spectacular Himalayas, forts, abandoned cities, ruins, battlefields, monuments, and temples. There are different languages, customs, and people. There are beaches, and trekking. If you are looking for variety, India offers it.

India is not a clinical place, it's a total experience that assaults your senses, changes your perspectives, strips away illusions, and delusions. It creates shifts in your dimensions. If ever you were on a path of self-discovery, India is the place to accelerate the process. For whatever you were when you came, forever more the experience will change who you are.

Nothing is easy, or simple, or the way you think it should be. Navigating, and dealing with all the daily issues, and situations, provides an ever present mirror you can't avoid looking into. This is where you come face-to- face with all aspects of yourself, not just the conditioned you, you are all to familiar with. You may think yourself patient, and find yourself at your wits end by the end of the day. You may think yourself flexible, and realize you have no true understanding of just what this word means. But as with any experience, India is what you make of it. It has provided me with more than I can express, as I continue to be intrigued, and forever affected by the richness of this land, its people, cultures, and customs.
