Yoga Bound Travel Adventures:

More from Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a tiny volcanic island tucked between Java, and Lombok, Indonesia. The balmy, paradisiacal conditions have created a physical paradise of heaven on earth. Because Bali is in close proximity to the equator, the temperature is pleasant, and consistently warm all year round, which is why we enjoy so much sleeping with the windows open at night. The breeze never seems to fail, and at night it is cool, while the days are warm, and breezy, especially if you are near the ocean. Or, up in the mountain areas.

There are roads we head down on our motor bike, that you would think, even with the weight of two not so small Westerners, that feel we might be lifted right up off the road, and tossed aside like a feather.

Bali is home to ancient Hindu temples, tiered, and not tiered rice paddies, lush green valleys, rivers, rural villages, waterfalls, some of the best surfing beaches in the world, some great snorkeling beaches, sophisticated bars, and restaurants in the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Ubud areas, and a culture of people you won’t find anywhere else on the planet. The swaying palm trees, majestic Banyan trees, and assorted lush flora touch a place in your soul, and keep you not only wanting for more, but hesitating to leave.

As usual we visited the temples, sometimes alone, other times with friends that invited us to their villages during special holidays. The Balinese Calendar is only 210 days. Of these 70 are ceremonial holidays. We were there during Galungan, Kuningan, as well as Independence Day, the first free election they have had since their freedom from the Dutch in 1945.

We went down every path that led to to every beach from Kuta to Negara. We headed to the Bukit Peninsula to Dreamland, to watch the sunset. Over to Nusa Dua. Up to Ubud. Suffice it to say, we know the Island like the back of our hand, and take every opportunity to drive down a new road exploring.

Our trip wasn’t all play, and no work. Quite the contrary. We spent every day looking for, and buying new fabrics, for our new products. Working with our suppliers to get our things made. Stressed out when things weren’t made the way they were ordered, though we did everything we could in advance to insure that things went smoothly.

The thing you must get accustomed to, and accept, when you do business in this part of the world, is that people do business their way, and that time has a different meaning. This is why we had to get two Visa extensions, practice a lot of Yoga, develop, yet again, even more patience, and tolerance, and generally get to a point where we simply didn’t let it get to us. Easier said than done, I can vouch for that. There were way too many stressful moments.

But the good news is that if you put all that aside, and simply enjoy, and experience Bali as a tourist, there is no place in the world that I would rather be. And I have either been, or lived just about everywhere. Join us won't you!
