Yoga Bound Travel Adventures:

Arriving Bali, Indonesia

On June 24th we headed on down to Bali, Indonesia. Our flight required a change of planes in Singapore. We were amazed at all the changes, to this, the number one airport in the world. They call Asia the third world, and you see evidence of this in some places, but for the most part, you also see some of the most sophisticated cities you can imagine.

We anticipated our arrival in Bali, Island of the Gods, Paradise, The Land of Milk, and Honey, with excitement, though we have been there every year for 10 years. There is quite simply, ‘No Place On Earth Like It’.

Upon departing the plane we were greeted at Immigration with a new law that had gone into effect in the Spring of this year. On arrival, everyone pays a $25.00 for a 30 day Visa. In years past there was no fee, and you could stay for 60 days.

We quickly went through all the airport procedures, then got in the line for a cab to Bali Subak in Legian, a place we always stay upon arriving, until we find something else. We  decided this year to stay around the Kuta area instead of up in Ubud so that we would be closer to all of our tailors, and suppliers. Plus, we love the beach.

As soon as we checked into the room, we hit the beach, which is within walking distance. The sound of the surf immediately wiped away all the fatigues, and stresses of traveling. We had dinner that night on the beach, then went back to the hotel.

The next morning we headed over to Pondok Sara Bungalows, where we usually stay when we are in this area. We had arrived during the tourist season, so the rates were double the year before. We decided to look elsewhere, and Nyoman, one of the guys that works there, took us to his brothers place, on the next gang (small road).

It was simply magnificent, way beyond our budget, but once I saw it, I simply couldn’t resist. After much negotiation (the Asian way), we ended up getting a great price, which was more than we wanted to spend, but you wouldn’t believe it. Our own private Villa, with a pool, daily maid, and pool service, I could go on, and on.

They usually rent for up to $3000.00 per month. I don’t know how we got so lucky, but I am don’t care, I am just grateful that we were able to do it, and enjoyed every single moment that we were there. There are so many stresses with travel, business, and the like, that where you come home to makes all the difference.

With that taken care of, we were able to unpack, and relax, knowing housing was handled. Nyoman also had a friend right on the corner that we rented our motorbike from. It was brand new so that, too, was a blessing.

We had barely settled in when we were off to downtown Denpasar to begin buying the fabric, zippers, and everything else we need to get our tailor started on our Yoga Bags, and eye pillows. The first three days, that was the mission.

We don’t like air-conditioning, so we opened the window upstairs in our bedroom, and never closed them for 2 ½ months. Each night we went to sleep with the symphony of crickets, birds, cats, dogs, roosters, and geckos. It would start out rather loud, but eventually died down, then would finally stop. But you became so accustomed to it, you barely noticed.

There was always a breeze, and it swished through the coconut palms, and bamboo, providing the most hypnotic of sounds, perfect for deep, relaxing sleep. Waking up to the sun, and surrounded by nature, it was as though we were living in our own private garden of eden, which of course we were, as the house was totally open. Even the shower, in traditional Balinese fashion, was outside. We enjoyed our morning outdoor yoga sessions, cooking in the open kitchen, quick dips in our own pool, the privacy, the garden, it is heaven on earth.
